The Tower of Fornells

The Tower of Fornells

The Torre de Fornells was built between 1801 and 1802 and was one of the many defensive towers that were built under English occupation. It is one of the largest towers in Menorca and reminds of a small castle. The objectives of the Torre de Fornells were twofold: the first, to protect the entrance to the port of Fornells(the third most important natural port in Menorca), and the second, to prevent the possible enemy landing to attack the nearby castle of Sant Antoni.

As in all the defensive towers of Menorca, two other towers can be seen from the Torre de Fornells. This system was designed to be able to communicate with each other.

The visit

The tower consists of 4 levels: the cistern, which was used to accumulate water, the floor below, which was the food and weapons warehouse, the first floor, where the troops lived, the terrace, where the artillery was located and from the place where the Menorcan contour was guarded. Although the interior of the tower is not particularly striking (there is a temporary exhibition where you can read everything about the tower), from its top you get excellent views of the area.

As you climb the tower from the parking lot, you will pass by the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes, a small sanctuary carved out of the rock.
